GARRISON LAKE Imagine a lake in the middle of a city. And not just any lake, but a big
lake. This coastal dune lake covers 130 acres (!) with an average
depth of eleven feet. The maximum depth is twenty-eight feet.
Bird-watchers can train their binoculars on lots of birds in this
fly zone. Be sure to check out the “BIRDS” page of this
website to identify them. There are aquatic animals too: beaver,
mink, muskrat and otter. On
shore opossum, raccoon, weasel, deer, and squirrel might be sited.
Fishing is good because the lake is stocked with cutthroat trout, rainbow
trout, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, chinook salmon (also known as
king or blackmouth), and yellow perch. Drive west on 18th Street, to Pinehurst
Drive for easy access to the lake. There is a public fishing dock where
canoes and kayaks can be launched. Boats can also be launched from 12th
Street at the public dock where there are picnic tables, rest rooms, water,
and a barbecue pit.
Picnic, swim, canoe, kayak, water ski, fish, enjoy nature, and spectacular
sunsets…that describes Garrison Lake.
